Travel Guide to 7 Days in Saigon

We arrived in Saigon in the wee hours of the morning on a Saturday after a 17-hour train ride from Da Nang. I expected to be greeted by throngs of people or loud honking of motorcycles. But the Ho Chi Minh (“HCM”) that greeted us that early Saturday morning was sleepy and quite balmy. It seemed like there was rain a few hours before we arrived. Passengers that got off from the train were silent and dazed. I was sad to have ended our epic 32-hour journey aboard Vietnam’s Reunification Express.

30 Days of Outfits in Vietnam in 1 Backpack

Because of the often difficult modes of transportation from the city to my hometown in Siquijor, I have always packed my bags light because I need to carry them myself. Our provincial transportation is as rough as you can get that sometimes we sit with chickens and pigs and a hundred other people. From an early age, I have carried my own bags and thus have learned to pack light and pack well that now it does not matter what mode of transportation I take. On our trip to Vietnam in August, I managed to fit 30 days worth of outfits in just one backpack weighing a mere 6 kilos!

Thang Long Citadel and Ba Dinh Square

Thang Long was the former name of Hanoi. It literally means “rising dragon” and this dragon is the same dragon that descended upon in Ha Long Bay, at least according to our guide, aptly named Mr. Vietnam. While Hanoi is famous for being a charming old-world timeless city, it was also the birthplace of many great empires, the remains of which has been inscribed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
