Guide to Visita Iglesia in Siquijor

This guide to a Visita Iglesia in Siquijor was something I wrote for Tripzilla for the Holy Week. I patterned this after a recent visita iglesia I did with a guest who visited Siquijor for the first time. While Siquijor will not boast of centuries-old and magnificent churches, we do have our share of historic churches.

  1. Saint Francis de Assisi Parish Church (Siquijor, Siquijor)
    1. When in Siquijor, might as well also:
  2. San Augustin de Hippo Parish Church (San Juan, Siquijor)

SIQUIJOR ISLAND is your Destination

I was born and raised in Siquijor, a very small island in central Philippines. It is my home so I am biased when I say it is a piece of heaven here on Earth.

Short visit to my home province, Siquijor.

Siquijor is a cliche tourist destination — white sand beaches, cool waterfalls, numerous rivers, and Spanish-era churches. The time you step down the gang plank at the port in the town of Siquijor (one town is also named Siquijor), a long stretch of white sand welcomes you. The people are, like every where else in the Philippines, warm and friendly. Underneath this tourist-y exterior though is the real reason why you should and must pay Siquijor a visit.

Here are my top 8 reasons why Siquijor is a must destination in the Philippines:

  1. Siquijor is SILENCE
  2. Siquijor is ISOLATION
  3. Siquijor is QUAINT
  4. Siquijor is UNEXPLORED
  5. Siquijor is INTER-RELATIONSHIPS
  6. Siquijor is JOYRIDE
  7. Siquijor is ORGANIC
  8. Siquijor is RAW

Travel Guide to 11 Days in Hanoi

Hanoi celebrated its 1,000th year as a city in 2010. There were two reasons why Hanoi was the entry point of our month-long Vietnam trip: Ha Long Bay and the fact that Hanoi is underrated compared to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh). We arrived in August, when, fortunately, there were not as many tourists as I anticipated, but, unfortunately, when the rains have already started coming in.

Travel Guide to 5 Days in Hue

The city of Hue (pronounced “Hway” with a smile) was the former cultural, political, and religious capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty. The Nguyens ruled the country from 1802 to 1945. We all know what happened in and to Vietnam after 1945. Politics and society changed, and so did the seat of power. While Hue was almost obliterated during the Vietnam War, the city managed to keep some of the imperial complexes. In 1993, UNESCO inscribed the city and its surrounding areas, including the royal tombs, and temples as a World Heritage Site.

Travel Guide to Melaka: The Red Multi-Cultural City

It was a short and sweet overnight visit to Melaka (Malacca), the UNESCO World Heritage town in Malaysia. Visiting for one day does not make me an authority to write a travel guide to Melaka but here I am. Elementary history lessons in the Philippines teach children the travel of Ferdinand Magellan and the Western world’s quest for the Moluccas or the Spice Islands. Melaka is not the Moluccas Magellan was looking for but Melaka was an important port that allowed Western colonization to flourish in Asia.
