Travel Guide to Melaka: The Red Multi-Cultural City

It was a short and sweet overnight visit to Melaka (Malacca), the UNESCO World Heritage town in Malaysia. Visiting for one day does not make me an authority to write a travel guide to Melaka but here I am. Elementary history lessons in the Philippines teach children the travel of Ferdinand Magellan and the Western world’s quest for the Moluccas or the Spice Islands. Melaka is not the Moluccas Magellan was looking for but Melaka was an important port that allowed Western colonization to flourish in Asia.

First Time in Melaka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Before stepping foot in Melaka, I envisioned old buildings, old buildings, and more old buildings. It was only when I actually stepped foot into the city that I realized my research was not as in-depth as I thought it was because (1) I forgot Malacca is actually one of the states of Malaysia, and (2) I didn’t realize it is a city, a modern city, a really modern city.

I settled with Layang-layang among the numerous options because I liked their photographs in the AirBnB web site. Continue reading “Where to Stay in Melaka: Layang-Layang Guesthouse via AirBnB”

What We Ate in Melaka as First Time Visitors

I have to apologize beforehand if you won’t see any traditional Melakan food in this entry. Melakan food is a must-try, many say. And I have actually prepared a list of where to eat already. But, unfortunately, Melaka, as a city, was a sight to behold and I was just mesmerized by it all that I forgot about the list. My sister, however, already requested months before our travel date that we eat at Nando’s, so I placed that at the top of our must-dos in Melaka. Anyhow, despite the absence of tasting real Melakan food, I think we had a great time in the wonderful city in terms of food.

  1. Ola Lavanderia Cafe
  2. Old Town Cafe
  3. Tim Ho Wan
  4. Nando’s
